Position Overview

The Greenville County Youth Orchestra (GCYO) is seeking an enthusiastic, musically accomplished Rehearsal Assistant to support our conductors and young musicians during weekly rehearsals and concert cycles.

The primary responsibility of this role is to lead targeted sectional rehearsals

Key Responsibilities

Musical & Instructional Leadership

• Lead Sectional Rehearsals: Direct small group rehearsals (e.g., Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, or Percussion depending on specialty) to refine bowings, fingerings, articulation, intonation, and rhythm.
• Support Conductors: Observe full ensemble rehearsals, mark scores with conductor choices (tempo, dynamics, phrasing), and step in to conduct or assist as needed.
• Individual Mentorship: Provide constructive feedback and assistance to student musicians who need additional support on complex passages.
• Repertoire Preparation: Study full scores and sectional parts prior to rehearsals to identify potential pitfalls and plan efficient sectional strategies.

Qualifications & Skills

Required

• Musical Expertise: Advanced proficiency on an orchestral instrument (Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, or Percussion) with strong sight-reading skills and score-reading capabilities.
• Pedagogical Knowledge: Experience teaching private lessons, directing ensembles, or leading chamber groups-specifically with middle and high school musicians.
• Communication: Ability to convey musical concepts clearly, efficiently, and encouragingly in a group setting.
• Reliability: Punctual, highly organized, and available for weekly evening rehearsals throughout the academic season (August-May).
