Job Description
The Maintenance Technician supports steel mill operations by maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing overhead cranes, mechanical systems, and heavy industrial machinery. This role requires a highly mechanically inclined professional who is comfortable working around large equipment and can diagnose problems quickly in a demanding production environment.
Responsibilities
- Inspect, repair, and maintain overhead cranes, hoists, trolleys, and lifting systems to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Diagnose mechanical failures in motors, gearboxes, conveyors, pumps, and other mill machinery to minimize production downtime.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance tasks, including lubrication, adjustments, inspections, and component replacements.
- Service and maintain hydraulic systems, including cylinders, valves, hoses, and related components.
- Service and maintain pneumatic systems, including compressors, valves, and air-operated equipment.
- Assist with minor welding, cutting, and fabrication repairs to support equipment reliability.
- Work safely around electrical systems and assist electricians when mechanical issues are involved, following established safety practices.
- Follow all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout, crane safety protocols, confined space requirements, and proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Document all repairs, parts used, inspections, and maintenance activities in a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) or shift logs.
- Collaborate closely with equipment operators, supervisors, and engineering staff to quickly identify and resolve equipment issues.
- Support continuous improvement efforts by identifying recurring mechanical problems and suggesting corrective actions.
Essential Skills
- Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience maintaining and repairing heavy industrial machinery.
- Proficiency in troubleshooting mechanical issues on motors, gearboxes, conveyors, pumps, and related equipment.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance, including lubrication, adjustments, and part replacements.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems, including inspection, repair, and servicing of cylinders, valves, and hoses.
- Knowledge of pneumatic systems, including compressors, valves, and air-operated tools and equipment.
- Ability to safely work around electrical systems and coordinate with electricians on mechanically related issues.
- Ability to accurately document maintenance work in CMMS or written shift logs.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, demanding production environment and respond quickly to equipment breakdowns.
- Ability to work safely at heights and on ladders in and around crane runways.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks in an industrial setting.
