Our Utility Client in Poughkeepsie, NY is looking for a 12+month RTH Contractor with 3-4 years of Business/Data Analysis for this Hybrid role. Must be a GC/USC to work on our payroll and convert FTE.

n IT Business Analyst is a business-facing data professional who bridgesbusiness knowledge and enterprise data architecture. This role partners closely with the Data Engineers and IT Program Manager to define and document enterprise data. The IT Business Analyst is responsible for translating business concepts into governed data definitions, ensuring clarity around data meaning, lineage, ownership, and reportability. This role is critical in establishing trusted data foundations through data dictionaries, data transfer specifications (DTS), and data cataloging practices.

What does an IT Business Analyst do?

The Business Analyst is responsible for the following:

  • Partner with the Data Engineer and IT Program Manager to support the development of new data specifications, datasets, and reporting structures.
  • Lead the documentation and maintenance of enterprise data artifacts, including Data Dictionaries (business definitions, attributes, domains, and rules)
  • Initially a ct as a data steward ensuring consistent definitions, naming standards, and governance practices across subject areas.
  • ccountable for identifying, logging, and driving closure of data issues with SMEs and engineers
  • Maintain Data Transfer Specifications (source-to-target mappings, transformation logic, frequency, and ownership)
  • Maintain Data Catalog entries (business context, sensitivity, usage, and stewardship)
  • Identify, engage, and coordinate with business Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) across departments to elicit requirements, validate definitions, and confirm reportability of data elements.
  • Facilitate working sessions and interviews with SMEs to document current-state and future-state data usage, gaps, and dependencies.
  • ssist in assessing data classification and reportability, including identification of sensitive, regulated, or restricted data elements (e.g., CEII, PII), in alignment with governance and compliance standards.
  • Translate business requirements into clear, actionable documentation consumable by Data Engineers and analytics teams.

What does it take to be an IT Business Analyst?
Required:
  • 3+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, Data Analyst, or Data Steward supporting enterprise data initiatives.
  • Strong business domain knowledge with demonstrated ability to translate business concepts into structured data documentation.
  • Hands-on experience creating and maintaining: Data Dictionaries, Data Transfer Specifications (DTS) or source-to-target mappings, or Data catalogs or metadata repositories.
  • Proven experience working with business SMEs.
  • Experience in technical writing, with the ability to translate ambiguous business input into clear, structured documentation.
  • Working knowledge of relational data concepts (tables, columns, keys, relationships) sufficient to collaborate effectively with Data Engineers.

  • Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across technical and business teams.
  • Strong documentation and knowledge transfer capabilities such as process maps and user guides.

  • Experience in the utility, energy, or regulated industry.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with utility industry asset management systems and related business processes.
  • Prior role as a Data Steward or governance lead.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft data and analytics tools, including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, PowerBi.
  • SharePoint or similar platforms for documentation and collaboration
  • Certifications or training in Business Analysis, Data Governance, or Data Management (e.g., CBAP, CDMP, DAMA-DMBOK familiarity).
