Position Description

Job Title: Pipe Foreman

Reports To: Superintendent / Project Manager

Position Summary

The Pipe Foreman is responsible for leading underground utility crews installing storm drain, sanitary sewer, water, and related structures. This role ensures work is completed safely, correctly, and efficiently while maintaining production goals, quality standards, and crew accountability.

Key Responsibilities

Crew Leadership & Supervision

  • Lead, direct, and motivate pipe crew members daily
  • Assign tasks based on crew skill levels and job needs
  • Ensure all crew members understand the daily plan and expectations
  • Train new hires and coach crew members on proper installation methods
Safety
  • Enforce all company safety policies and OSHA standards
  • Conduct daily Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) and toolbox talks
  • Ensure proper trench safety (shoring, trench boxes, slope)
  • Stop work immediately if unsafe conditions exist
Pipe Installation & Quality Control
  • Oversee installation of:
    • Storm drainage systems
    • Sanitary sewer
    • Water lines
    • Manholes, inlets, junction boxes, and headwalls
  • Ensure pipe is installed to line, grade, and slope per plans
  • Verify proper bedding, backfill, compaction, and testing
  • Identify and correct quality issues before inspection
Plans, Layout & Coordination
  • Read and interpret plans, profiles, and specifications
  • Work with survey/layout to maintain correct line and grade
  • Coordinate with other crews (grading, paving, utilities)
  • Communicate daily progress and obstacles to Superintendent
Equipment & Materials
  • Coordinate equipment needs with Superintendent
  • Ensure proper use and care of company equipment
  • Track material usage and prevent waste
  • Confirm correct materials are on site prior to installation
Production & Documentation
  • Meet daily and weekly production goals
  • Track quantities installed and report progress
  • Ensure accurate timekeeping and job cost awareness
  • Assist with inspections and documentation as required
Position Requirements

Qualifications
  • 3-5+ years of underground utility experience
  • Proven experience leading a pipe crew
  • Strong knowledge of pipe installation methods and standards
  • Ability to read and understand construction plans
  • Knowledge of trench safety and OSHA regulations
  • Strong communication and leadership skills
  • Clean 10 year MVR
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift 50+ lbs
  • Ability to work in and around trenches and heavy equipment
