Role Description
SMBC is modernizing its Risk Technology landscape to support analytics, regulatory reporting, and enterprise stress testing. We are seeking a Risk Technology Director with strong platform engineering leadership, cloud-native architecture expertise, and the ability to deliver scalable, compliant, data-intensive systems. This leader will drive end-to-end modernization across stress testing, risk data pipelines, and regulatory reporting platforms.
The ideal candidate combines deep technical engineering experience with strong cross-functional influence, and thrives in environments requiring modern distributed systems, cloud integration, and rigorous data governance.
Role Objectives: Delivery
Platform & Delivery Leadership
- Lead the architecture, modernization, and delivery of cloud-native, microservices-based stress testing and risk data platforms.
- Oversee the execution of scalable data ingestion, transformation, and integration pipelines that support CCAR, FR Y-14A/Q/M, and internal stress testing needs.
- Drive platform reliability, performance optimization, and automation across containerized and distributed systems.
- Manage complex programs from discovery through implementation, ensuring clear ownership, delivery milestones, and cross-team alignment.
Regulatory & Risk Platform Enablement
- Partner with Model Risk, Finance, and Regulatory Reporting to operationalize risk methodologies, stress scenarios, and capital impact workflows.
- Ensure that platforms meet auditability, documentation, and regulatory compliance standards aligned with Federal Reserve expectations.
- Support the accurate and timely production of CCAR and FR Y-14 regulatory submissions through technology platforms that are secure, scalable, and well-governed.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Serve as the technology liaison across Data Engineering, Cloud Infrastructure, Information Security, and Application Development.
- Present platform capabilities, risks, and architecture decisions to senior management.
- Champion a culture of transparency, continuous improvement, and cross-organizational trust.
Innovation & Modern Engineering Practices
- Introduce improvements leveraging cloud services (Azure, AWS), Databricks/Spark, distributed computation, and modern data engineering frameworks.
- Drive adoption of AI/ML-enabled analytics to enhance automation, anomaly detection, and risk decisioning.
- Embed CI/CD, observability, and DevSecOps best practices into all platform components.
Qualifications and Skills Technical Expertise
- 12+ years of experience delivering large-scale, data-intensive platforms within highly regulated industries (banking preferred but not required).
- Deep experience with cloud-native engineering (Azure strongly preferred; AWS or GCP acceptable).
- Advanced proficiency in Python and Java for distributed systems, APIs, and data pipelines.
- Hands-on experience with Spark, Databricks, Kafka, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and microservices architectures.
- Familiarity with stress testing frameworks (CCAR/DFAST), regulatory reporting processes, and risk analytics concepts (VaR, sVaR, credit risk indicators).
- Understanding of data governance, lineage, quality controls, and secure data-exchange practices.
Leadership & Interpersonal Skills
- Proven ability to lead engineering teams and influence cross-functional stakeholders.
- Experience presenting complex technical concepts to senior executives and regulators.
- Demonstrated ability to operate in environments with competing priorities and high accountability.
Preferred
- Experience with AI/ML model integration, GPU-based computation, or semantic search pipelines.
- Exposure to Databricks, Delta Lake, and distributed batch/streaming frameworks.
