Summary
The Electrical Design Checker ensures the quality, accuracy, compliance, and constructability of electrical design deliverables prepared by electrical engineers and designers for heavy industrial projects (such as pulp & paper, power, chemical, and other industrial facilities). This role focuses on reviewing, validating, and checking electrical drawings, schematics, and documentation against project requirements, industry standards, and company design criteria. This position supports the electrical design team by acting as a key quality assurance point before deliverables are issued for construction or client review.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Review & Checking
    • Review and validate electrical design deliverables including:
      • Single-line diagrams (SLDs)
      • Load lists and distribution plans
      • Motor elementaries and motor control schematics
      • Grounding plans, lighting layouts, power plans, and cable schedules
      • Raceway and conduit routing drawings
      • Electrical equipment specifications and schedules
    • Ensure design documents are code-compliant (NEC, NFPA, local codes) and align with project standards and client criteria.
  • Coordination & Compliance
    • Verify that electrical designs are coordinated with other disciplines (mechanical, structural, process, instrumentation).
    • Confirm that design outputs align with project technical specifications and scope.
    • Provide feedback and required corrections to designers and engineers.
  • Quality Assurance
    • Conduct thorough checks for accuracy, completeness, consistency, and constructability.
    • Track and document review comments; follow up to ensure corrective actions are implemented.
    • Support engineering management in ensuring design quality metrics.
  • Documentation & Standards
    • Maintain and update company design standards and checklists.
    • Ensure revision control and proper documentation for all checked deliverables.
    • Assist in preparing final release packages for construction issuance.
  • Communication
    • Collaborate with electrical engineers and designers throughout project phases.
    • Communicate findings and recommendations clearly to design team and project leadership.
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5+ years of electrical engineering/design experience in industrial or construction environments preferred (exact years may vary with seniority).
Required Skills
  • Strong knowledge of electrical design fundamentals including power distribution, protection, grounding, and lighting.
  • Experience with electrical CAD tools such as AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or similar.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical skills, and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and check electrical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience in heavy industrial design (e.g., pulp & paper, chemical, power).
  • Familiarity with applicable electrical codes and engineering standards (NEC, IEEE).
  • Prior experience performing design checking or QA/QC reviews.
