Field Service Engineer - Semiconductor (Bilingual Japanese/English Preferred)

Job Overview: Work with advanced thin film processing tools for PVD deposition in semiconductor manufacturing. Interface directly with customers to support equipment in the field, including troubleshooting and installations. Perform technical support for high vacuum equipment, PVD, and robotics in cleanrooms. Provide on-call support, which may include off-shift work.

  • Note: This role is based on a 35-hour workweek. It requires full-time presence at assigned office(s)/worksite(s) in San Jose, CA. This is a customer-facing role with compliance to customer policies, including COVID-19 measures.
Responsibilities:
  • Monitor, inspect, set up, calibrate, and maintain semiconductor process equipment to prevent downtime.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues and implement solutions.
  • Collect data for software issues and discuss with headquarters in Japan.
  • Accurately document all maintenance activities and provide field service reports.
  • Install equipment control software and maintain revision history records.
  • Participate in equipment installations at customer sites.
  • Monitor stock levels of service parts and equipment for repairs.
  • Provide training and assistance to other technicians.
  • Communicate effectively with customers and team members.
  • Escalate serious or complicated repair problems to senior team members.
Basic Qualifications:
  • HS Diploma, GED, or equivalent required; or BS in a related field preferred, plus 1-2 years of related experience (e.g., FSE or technician in semiconductor equipment or engineering field).
  • Experience with PVD or semiconductor vacuum equipment.
  • Experience with multi-chamber cluster systems and robotics highly preferred.
  • Ability to understand electrical and mechanical drawings for troubleshooting.
  • Experience with PLC and other software applications a plus.
  • Ability to work independently after 3-6 months of on-the-job training.
  • Strong analytical skills for problem analysis and resolution.
  • Ability to decide on problem-solving roadmaps and follow methodical approaches.
  • Ability to decide and recommend spare and consumable parts for PMs and repairs.
  • Bilingual skills (Japanese/English) helpful but not required.
Physical and Travel Requirements:
  • Domestic travel up to 25% and international travel for training; considerable travel throughout sales territory.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record required; substantial driving, sometimes for multiple hours.
  • Ability to lift approximately 50 lbs; occasional kneeling, crouching, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and climbing stairs or ladders.
  • Substantial standing, walking, typing, grasping, talking, and hearing.
  • Close visual acuity required for inspection, measurement, and assembly of small parts.
  • Work in cleanroom environment (full cleanroom suit, facemask, gloves, safety glasses).
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, ultraviolet light, lasers, enclosed spaces, and high-pressure situations.
  • Flexible shifts may be required.
