We are seeking a Sr. Engineer, Thermal Hydraulics for an innovative nuclear company. The Sr. Engineer, Thermal Hydraulics will provide thermal hydraulics methods development for our reactor program. This role will support computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model verification and validation, thermal systems modeling strategy and execution, development of computational and database tools to support cross-functional collaboration, and software quality assurance.
Strong candidates will have prior experience interfacing with thermal hydraulic modeling teams, test engineering teams, and have demonstrated experience leading or supporting CFD modeling, experimental design, data collection and analysis, and model validation for thermal-fluid systems. In this role, you will be responsible for the development of tools and methodologies for generation, organization, and interpretation of raw experimental data and its comparison to modeling results.
Tasks:
• Interface with test engineering and CFD modeling teams to design and conduct experiments for CFD model validation
o Identify key figures of merit for model validation and how they may be measured experimentally
o Support the development of test plans to isolate cause and effect for key figures of merit by varying experimental variables such as boundary conditions and operating states
o Support the test engineering team by specifying data collection requirements, instrumentation, and procedures in support of model validation needs
o Quantify/propagate measurement uncertainty into model inputs and outputs
• Process and analyze raw experimental data:
o Filter and organize raw data
o Extract key metrics (e.g. pressure drop, heat flux, temperature maps) for direct model comparison
o Iterate with modeling and simulation leads: propose new test points, update models, and re-validate
• Perform code benchmarking and validation analyses to support code qualification and methodology development
• Perform calculations using first principles of heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and thermodynamics to support and validate analysis results
• Develop and apply other thermal-hydraulic analysis methods as needed, including steady state and transient scaled one-dimensional and three-dimensional methods
• Integrate with other engineering groups performing aspects of component, system, fuel, and control system design and related thermal-hydraulic testing
• Develop and implement custom software tools for the purposes of standardizing, organizing, and controlling things like project thermophysical properties or experimental datasets
Key Qualifications and Skills:
• PhD in Mechanical, Chemical, or Nuclear Engineering +3-5 years of related experience OR MS degree plus 6-8 years of related experience OR a Bachelor's degree with 10-15 years of related experience
• Experience implementing experimental methods in thermal-fluid systems, model validation, or interfacing with experimental teams
• Experience with modeling dynamic thermal fluid systems
• Proficiency with MathCAD or equivalent tool (MATLAB - Live Editor, Jupyter, Julia + Pluto, etc.)
• Experience with Conjugate Heat Transfer tools and methods, including STARCCM+ or ANSYS CFX and/or Fluent is highly desired
• Proficiency in package development using Python and GitHub
• Experience with analysis of high temperature thermal-fluid systems is desired
• Strong communication skills desired.
• The service provider will possess a high degree of trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect, and a desire to foster teamwork.
