Position Description

Reports To: Foreman / Superintendent

Position Summary

The Back End Roller Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a back end (finish) roller to achieve the final compaction and smoothness of asphalt surfaces during paving operations. This position works closely with the paving crew to ensure finished pavement meets project specifications, density requirements, and quality standards.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate back end roller equipment to provide final compaction and a smooth, uniform surface on freshly placed asphalt.
  • Monitor mat smoothness, texture, and density to ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Adjust roller speed, vibration settings, and rolling patterns for optimal results.
  • Perform daily pre-operational and post-operational inspections of equipment.
  • Complete routine maintenance such as greasing, checking fluid levels, and cleaning the roller.
  • Coordinate with the paving crew, foreman, and other equipment operators to ensure seamless production flow.
  • Maintain constant awareness of surroundings, especially when working near ground personnel and other machinery.
  • Follow all company safety policies and DOT/OSHA regulations, including wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Assist with general labor duties or other equipment operations when not operating the roller.

Position Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Minimum 1 year of experience operating a back end roller or similar asphalt compaction equipment.
  • Knowledge of asphalt paving processes and final compaction techniques.
  • Ability to read and understand project specifications and apply them to rolling operations.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform tasks requiring bending, kneeling, and climbing.
  • Work in high-noise environments and around heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work long or irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required by project schedules.
