Position Description

Reports To: Foreman / Superintendent

Position Summary

The Front End Roller Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a front end roller to compact and smooth asphalt, subgrade, or other materials during paving and road construction projects. This role ensures that compaction meets project specifications and quality standards while working in coordination with the paving crew and other equipment operators.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate front end roller equipment to compact and smooth surfaces for asphalt paving or other construction applications.
  • Monitor material density, surface smoothness, and rolling patterns to ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Perform daily pre-operational and post-operational inspections of equipment.
  • Conduct routine maintenance such as greasing, checking fluid levels, and cleaning the roller.
  • Communicate with paving crew, foreman, and other operators to coordinate rolling operations for maximum efficiency.
  • Adjust rolling speed, vibration settings, and patterns to achieve proper compaction.
  • Maintain awareness of surroundings, especially near ground personnel and other equipment.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including use of required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Assist with other labor or site duties when roller operation is not required.
Position Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Minimum 1 year of experience operating a front end roller or similar compaction equipment.
  • Knowledge of compaction principles and asphalt paving processes.
  • Ability to understand and follow grade and compaction specifications.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform tasks requiring bending, kneeling, and climbing.
  • Work in high-noise environments and around heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work long or irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required by project schedules.
