Position Description

Position Summary

The Excavator Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of excavators to perform tasks such as digging, trenching, grading, and material handling on construction sites. This role requires precision in operating the equipment, knowledge of excavation techniques, and the ability to work closely with crew members to complete projects on time, within budget, and to specifications.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

• Operate excavators to perform excavation, trenching, grading, and material movement.
• Read and follow project plans, blueprints, grade stakes, and instructions from supervisors.
• Control excavator functions for precise cuts, slopes, and depths.
• Load trucks, place pipe, and assist in utility installation as required.
• Perform daily pre-operational and post-operational inspections of equipment.
• Conduct routine maintenance such as greasing, checking fluids, and cleaning the machine.
• Monitor job site conditions and adjust operations to ensure safety and efficiency.
• Coordinate with ground crews and other operators to complete tasks smoothly.
• Maintain awareness of surroundings, especially near personnel, traffic, and other equipment.
• Follow all company safety policies, DOT/OSHA regulations, and use required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Assist with general labor duties when equipment operation is not required.

Position Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements

• Minimum 1 year of experience operating an excavator or similar heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of excavation techniques and safe operating procedures.
• Ability to read and follow grade stakes, plans, and specifications.
• Understanding of trench safety and underground utility installation.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
• Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform tasks requiring bending, kneeling, and climbing into and out of equipment.
• Work in high-noise environments and around heavy machinery.

Ability to work long or irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required by project schedules.
