Position Description

Reports To: Project Manager / Superintendent

Position Summary

The Grading Foreman is responsible for supervising and coordinating grading operations on construction projects to ensure work is completed safely, on time, within budget, and to quality specifications. This position manages grading crews, oversees equipment use, and ensures compliance with all applicable safety and environmental regulations. The Grading Foreman will lead by example, fostering teamwork, maintaining morale, and promoting a safe and productive job site.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate daily grading activities, ensuring adherence to project plans and specifications.
  • Assign tasks to crew members and monitor progress, quality, and safety throughout the day.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, grade stakes, and survey data to establish project grades.
  • Operate and oversee heavy equipment such as motor graders, dozers, and excavators.
  • Check grades using survey instruments, lasers, and GPS equipment, making necessary adjustments.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of all equipment, reporting needed repairs promptly.
  • Communicate with the Project Manager and other site supervisors to coordinate workflow and resolve issues.
  • Maintain daily logs, time records, and equipment reports.
  • Promote and enforce safety policies, conducting daily safety meetings and inspections.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate crew members to improve performance and productivity.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free job site.

Position Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in grading operations, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting project plans, specifications, and grade layouts.
  • Experience operating and supervising use of heavy grading equipment.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of soil types, compaction requirements, and erosion control practices.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions and extended hours as needed.
  • Valid driver's license; clean 10 year MVR
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment
  • Frequent exposure to outdoor conditions including heat, cold, dust, and noise.
  • Requires lifting up to 50 lbs. and performing physical tasks such as climbing, bending, and walking over uneven terrain.


Ability to work long or irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as project schedules demand.
