Position Description

Position Summary

The Grading Superintendent oversees all grading operations on construction projects, ensuring work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications. This role is responsible for managing crews, coordinating equipment and materials, maintaining production schedules, and ensuring high-quality workmanship on roadway, site development, and earthwork projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, direct, and supervise daily grading operations and crews.
  • Coordinate equipment, manpower, and materials to meet project schedules.
  • Ensure grading is performed to required lines, grades, slopes, and compaction specifications.
  • Read and interpret project blueprints, grade stakes, and construction plans.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and inspectors to resolve issues.
  • Enforce company and regulatory safety standards; conduct daily safety meetings.
  • Perform routine inspections of grading equipment and oversee preventive maintenance.
  • Monitor productivity and quality of work, making adjustments as needed.
  • Track daily production reports, equipment usage, and manpower hours.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate crew members to improve performance and skill levels.
Coordinate with survey crews to ensure grade accuracy.

Position Requirements

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent (civil construction or engineering background preferred).
  • 5+ years of grading or heavy highway/site development experience.
  • Prior supervisory or superintendent-level experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of earthwork, soils, compaction, and GPS machine control systems.
  • Proficiency in reading plans, specifications, and grade layouts.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to make quick, effective decisions in the field.
  • Valid driver's license; clean10 year MVR.
Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. for extended periods.
  • Willingness to work overtime, nights, and weekends as needed.
