Position Description

Reports To: Foreman / Superintendent

Position Summary

The Screed Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the screed on an asphalt paving machine to produce a smooth, uniform, and properly compacted mat of asphalt. This role requires precise control of screed settings, close coordination with the paving operator and crew, and attention to detail to ensure the finished surface meets project specifications for thickness, slope, and smoothness.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate the screed on an asphalt paver to control mat thickness, width, and slope.
  • Monitor and adjust screed settings, strike-off plates, augers, and tow points during paving operations.
  • Ensure proper temperature, texture, and uniformity of asphalt mat.
  • Communicate with the paving operator to coordinate speed, material feed, and machine adjustments.
  • Read and follow grade stakes, string lines, or slope references to maintain specified grades and cross slopes.
  • Perform daily pre-operational and post-operational equipment inspections.
  • Clean, maintain, and lubricate screed components as required.
  • Work closely with the paving crew to ensure consistent production flow and quality results.
  • Follow all company safety protocols and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Assist with general labor duties when screed operation is not active.

Position Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year of experience operating a screed or similar asphalt paving equipment.
  • Knowledge of paving techniques, mat compaction requirements, and screed adjustments.
  • Ability to read and follow grade specifications and project plans.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform tasks involving bending, kneeling, climbing, and standing for long periods.
  • Work in high-noise environments and around heavy equipment.

Ability to work long or irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required by project schedules.
