What You Will Do

You will serve as a senior attorney handling complex tax and regulatory litigation, advising agency leadership, and providing subject‑matter expertise on South Carolina's alcohol beverage laws. You will also support the growth of the legal team by mentoring junior attorneys and contributing to legal projects across the agency.

Primary Job Duties Include

  • Litigate tax and regulatory matters in State and Federal trial and appellate courts, focusing on complex regulatory issues and office audit tax cases.
  • Draft Department Determinations, orders, and related pleadings for protested cases.
  • Serve as the agency's subject‑matter expert on alcohol licensing disputes, enforcement actions, and the three‑tier regulatory scheme.
  • Advise the Chief Legal Counsel, agency divisions, and other governmental entities (including SLED) on legal interpretation, policy development, and enforcement matters under Title 61.
  • Handle unusual or specialized alcohol‑related cases at the direction of the Chief Legal Counsel.

Position may require some travel/overnight travel as necessary.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

  • A Juris Doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school and at least five years of experience as a practicing attorney.
  • Must be a member in good standing of the South Carolina Bar.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in business litigation, state and local tax law, administrative law practice, or an accounting background.
  • Extensive knowledge of alcoholic beverage laws.
  • Extensive knowledge of the law of South Carolina court rules and litigation procedures.

  • Hours: Flexible hours may be available from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Monday – Friday (37.5 hours per week).
  • Telework schedule: This position may be eligible to work remotely up to two days per week after one year of employment with SCDOR.
