The Animal Services Officer enforces local ordinances and state laws that regulate the keeping of animals within the City of Spartanburg. This position is a sworn Class 1 or Class 3 South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) certified officer. If not currently certified, the candidate must be able to successfully obtain certification once employed. The position requires after-hours, on-call responsibilities. The Animal Services Officer reports to the Support Services Bureau Major.
Enforce animal control ordinances, laws, and regulations
Initiate any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations
Respond to all incoming calls, which may include animal bites, animal cruelty/abuse, animals in distress, stray/nuisance animals, barking dogs, wild/dangerous animals, sick/injured animals, and animal behavior problems
Investigate complaints, document incidents and file appropriate reports
Issue warnings or ordinance summons/citations as appropriate
Prepare for and present cases in court
Write, file, and assist in the execution of warrants
Provide information and education to the public concerning animal control issues, city ordinances, humane treatment of animals, animal behavior problems, or other animal services issues
Present to civic groups, community organizations or media as required
Work with citizens to resolve disputes
Attend required training
Experience in animal control or animal enforcement preferred
South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) Class 1 or Class 3 certified officer preferred
Requires a High School diploma or equivalent
Must have a valid SC Drivers License
No Criminal record
Ability to lift at least a 50-pound animal
Salary depends upon experience. Starting salary is $41,912.00.
