This role will provide comprehensive paralegal support across the full lifecycle of litigation matters, including coverage evaluation, litigation management, e-discovery, and regulatory and compliance tasks related to commercial auto lines. The successful candidate will assist with drafting and coordinating coverage correspondence, organizing litigation and coverage files, managing deadlines and court filings, supporting discovery and motion practice, and liaising with outside counsel and internal claims professionals. The role will emphasize effective use of legal technology and, where appropriate, Generative AI tools consistent with Company policies to enhance quality, speed, and consistency in document preparation, research, and knowledge management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the Legal team in analyzing policies and claim materials to prepare and maintain coverage position letters, reservation of rights letters, and declination correspondence aligned with applicable law and Canal's guidelines.
  • Assist with legal research, cite-checking, and preparation of coverage summaries and draft opinion memoranda for attorney review.
  • Organize and maintain comprehensive matter files for coverage investigations, declaratory judgment actions, and defense litigation, including pleadings, discovery, expert materials, deposition transcripts, and key evidence.
  • Assist attorneys with drafting, formatting, and filing pleadings, notices, affidavits, discovery requests and responses, subpoenas, and motion papers in state and federal courts, including ECF filings and service of process coordination.
  • With Corporate Counsel Litigation and Coverage, oversee and coordinate responses to Department of Insurance complaints.
  • Manage litigation calendars and docketing for statutes of limitation, disclosure and discovery deadlines, mediation and pretrial dates, and briefing schedules across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Support discovery, including custodian identification, legal hold administration, data preservation, collection coordination with IT and vendors, privilege logs, and preliminary document review for responsiveness and confidentiality.
  • Assist with drafting and coordinating coverage-related pleadings and filings in declaratory judgment matters, including initial disclosures, dispositive motion packages, and supporting evidence compilation.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and protect privileged and work-product materials, ensuring alignment with ethical standards, regulatory requirements, and Canal's litigation and coverage protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • ABA-approved paralegal certificate strongly preferred.
  • 35 years of paralegal experience in insurance defense, coverage, and/or litigation, preferably within commercial auto, transportation, or related casualty lines.
  • Solid knowledge of state and federal civil procedure, e-filing platforms, discovery rules, and privilege/work product doctrine; multi-jurisdiction experience is a plus.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills with meticulous attention to detail and the ability to synthesize claim facts, policy provisions, and legal authority.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, document and matter management systems; comfort adopting new technologies and following established legal technology and AI guardrails.
  • Professional, collaborative, and business-oriented approach with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment, and communicate effectively with attorneys, claims professionals, and external counsel.
  • Demonstrated discretion handling confidential information and sensitive business materials.

Physical Requirements:

Constant use of vision, hearing, and communication (oral and written, in person and via telephone). Frequent concentration, standing, walking, handling, reaching, and grasping is required. There will be occasional bending, kneeling, and lifting (up to 25 lbs.). Heavy use of computer and office equipment required.

Travel/Hours of Service:

Occasional travel may be required. Periodic work outside of standard business hours or on weekends may be necessary based on litigation and filing deadlines.
