Job Summary

Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, state-certified Law Enforcement Officer enforces the laws of the State of South Carolina, municipal codes as applicable, and federal laws as they apply for properties of the Greenville Health Authority. Performs all duties of a police officer. Applies problem-solving techniques in support of the Department's community policing philosophy and to protect life and property.

Responds to calls for service, reports findings and takes appropriate action to resolve issues. Patrols assigned area. Assists with crime scene security and processing. Conducts follow-up investigations. Investigates crimes and employs crime reduction/prevention techniques situationally. Supports prosecution of criminal cases. Acts as liaison between the Police Department and the campus community. Builds rapport with staff, patients, and visitors.

Makes court appearances, serves warrants/subpoenas and places items into property and evidence. Investigates auto accidents; directs pedestrian and vehicular traffic as needed.

Essential Functions

  • Patrols assigned areas to detect and apprehend criminal activity. Maintains a highly visible presence while on patrol as both a deterrent to criminal activity and an outreach to the general public.
  • Investigates complaints and criminal activity to the fullest extent possible, interviewing available witnesses, victims and other participants. Collects physical and photographic evidence.
  • Completes all reports and supplemental documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Responds to and investigates collisions as required.
  • Performs traffic control and direction duties as needed in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ensures that communication with the public is clear, professional and concise.
  • Operates department vehicles in a safe manner at all times and with due regard to duties imposed by law.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - High School diploma or equivalent OR post-high school diploma/highest degree earned. College level coursework in criminal justice preferred.
  • Experience - Two (2) years of experience.

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • A valid driver's license; an acceptable motor vehicle record, as defined by the Acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Chart; and proof of auto insurance.
  • South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Class I Law Enforcement Officer Certification or formerly held a Law Enforcement Officer Certification from another state (with a break in service no more than three (3) years).
  • Certification through International Association of Hospital Security and Safety preferred. Must be obtained within the first six (6) months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Basic computer skills including word processing.
  • Knowledge of office equipment (fax/coper).
  • Mathematical skills.
