This is a hybrid role - minimum of 3 days in the office. Must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship now or in the future.

Summary/Purpose:

The Analytical Engineering Specialist primary responsibilities include maintaining and improving JTEKT's analytical capabilities and methods with an emphasis on computer assisted methods (CAE); also responsible for performing analyses. The CAE methods include FEA, Dynamics, and Bearings in particular (system analysis to determine boundary/application conditions, life prediction, bearing component stress prediction, etc.); tools include in-house-developed software. Advanced problem solving of analytical models/applications, mentoring less experienced engineers in this field, and creating unique analytical methods as needed. The AE Specialist may also evaluate new tools and advise project teams on analysis results.

Essential Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Perform or assist/lead complex analysis of JTEKT products and/or JTEKT products' mating components.
    • Analysis methods include (not necessarily limited to): FEA, Dynamic modeling, Analysis method creation (unique special-purpose methods or rubrics), Valvetrain analysis
  • Maintain awareness of "state of the art" for relevant analysis tools/software and make recommendations on maintaining and advancing our capabilities:
    • Evaluate and recommend new CAE tools
    • Advise on maintenance of existing tools
    • Begin assessing & exploring the role of AI tools, either integrated with purchased software or separate AI capabilities.
  • Will need to become proficient in the use of existing programs developed-in-house.
    • Maintenance of existing developed-in-house tools.
    • Support development/refinement of tools developed-in-house
  • Prepare technical reports from analysis results; including judgment of results.
  • Perform as in-house expert and/or Point of Contact when JBNA contracts analytical services.
  • Represent JBNA as CAE Specialist to other JTEKT entities
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong analytical skills are required. In particular, using engineering core fundamentals to assess the validity and deviation from real life of various calculations & simulation results. Some familiarity with the following concepts:
    • Euclidian & Affine Geometry.
    • Statics in structures such as trusses, beams and membranes.
    • Contact Mechanics.
    • Dynamics and Vector Mechanics.
    • Engineering Elements (Springs, Bolts, Washers, Bearings).
    • Linear Algebra and Numerical Methods such as Bisection, Newton-Raphson, Runge-Kutta, Interpolations, Curve Fitting, non-linear curves (cubic-splines)
    • Ability to read/follow software code and understand what it is doing.
  • Understand concepts in software development such as source control (git/svn), branching/merging, unit testing, dependencies, deployment methods etc.
  • Strength in mathematical modeling of components and/or of systems is required.
  • Expertise in the use of core CAE tools is required. E.G.Excel, MathCAD, MatLab, ANSYS, Visual Basic, CAD, Python (numpy/simply)
    • Advanced Excel Techniques ( Function Building/Parsing, Linear Algebra, Optimizer, Solver, Foreign Data Import, Tables, Array Operations, Filters, Value Lookup, XY Charts, User Defined Functions, and automation using VBA code )
    • Solidworks and CREO familiarity desired
  • Familiarity with the following tools is preferred:
    • Recurdyn , MASTA and/or ROMAX a plus.
    • Capability with basic programming tools is preferred. E.G. C#, Fortran, Visual Basic
    • Working knowledge of tribology preferred. Other expertise such as CFD a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience working with shared licensed software on a network is a given. Experience supporting troubleshooting access issues is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of component and system testing is required. The understanding of test set-up and its impact on boundary conditions and test results is critical.
  • Familiarity with automotive quality systems is preferred. E.G. TS16949
  • Strong written communication/technical writing skills required.
  • Presentation and verbal communication skills required, but not critical.
  • Ability to communicate detailed results and provide training to other associates
  • Work with minimum supervision, self-starter with focus on detail, tracking, and documentation

Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor Degree in Engineering, minimum. Mechanical Engineering or Theoretical & Applied Mechanics preferred
  • MS Degree (preferred). Mechanical Engineering or Theoretical & Applied Mechanics preferred.
  • 10 years experience with MS degree
  • 15 years experience with BS degree

  • The performance of this position may occasionally require exposure to manufacturing areas which require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses with side shields and mandatory hearing protection.
  • Travel by automobile and plane required approximately 10-20% of time.
