The award-winning Malone Center for Career Engagement has an opening for a strategic and collaborative Associate Director of Finance & Business Careers to join our team. The Malone Center at Furman University is committed to providing leading-edge career exploration, preparation, and employment connections. The team is dedicated to working collaboratively with each other, in addition to partnering with campus and external stakeholders to provide best-in-class career support to our students. This position will focus on building an ecosystem of career support for students interested in exploring and securing internships and full-time employment in finance, business, and related careers through individual/group career coaching, employer/alumni connections, and curated programming and resources.

The successful candidate must be student-centered, have a strong commitment to the liberal arts, and demonstrated experience engaging stakeholders through effective communications and highly effective programming.

Job Description:

Individual and Group Career & Internship Coaching
  • Serve as an industry expert for finance, business, and related careers with a focus on finance careers such as asset management, commercial banking, corporate finance, investment banking, personal financial planning, private equity, and wealth management. Stay up to date on industry trends, hiring timelines, and recruiting practices.
  • Provide one-on-one career coaching for students and early career alumni who have expressed an interest in exploring and preparing for careers in finance, business, and related fields. Career coaching topics include career exploration, resume writing, interview preparation, internships, job search strategies, graduate school applications, and salary negotiation.
  • Advise students on graduate school options in business and finance, including MBA programs, Master's in Finance, Master's in Business Analytics, and Master's in Computational/Quantitative Finance programs. Stay informed on program structures, timelines, and best-fit preparation strategies.
  • Track student engagements and internship/employment/graduate school outcomes.
Programming & Resources
  • Develop content and deliver professional development presentations on a variety of career topics such as job search strategies, resumes, and interview preparation. Coordinate skills-building workshops in high-demand areas such as Excel, PowerPoint, case interviews, and financial statement analysis.
  • Create and facilitate programming including networking events, alumni panels, and guest speakers to facilitate connections between students and alumni/employers in finance and business fields.
  • Plan and lead students on Career Treks to explore careers and make connections with alumni and recruiters in finance. (including employer outreach, student selection and preparation)
  • Partner with the student leadership of relevant student organizations to develop and deliver effective programming to align with the career interests of students.
  • Update existing and add new finance internship listings to Furman's Internship Database. Review and vet new finance internship opportunities to ensure they meet the University's high impact practice guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain curated resources (e.g., finance recruiting guides, case prep materials, career collections, technical skills modules) for students interested in finance and business fields. Create resource for students interested in relevant exams such as the SIE, Series 63, and Series 65, including how and when to pursue them.
Relationship Development & Engagement
  • Develop and maintain relationships with employers, professional associations, alumni, parents, and graduate schools for advising, networking, programming, and other career education purposes.
  • In close collaboration with Associate Director of Employer Engagement and Mentoring and Alumni Coordinator, connect students with employers, alumni, and parents via classroom presentations, networking events, informational interviews, and other programs.
  • Generate contact list of "industry-experts" comprised of alumni and professionals in finance and business who are willing to connect with students for inquiries, informational interviews, job shadowing, mock interviews, etc.
  • Establish relationships with faculty in relevant departments to gain understanding of curriculum and competencies developed by majors. Collaborate with faculty to develop and encourage student attendance at events.
  • Serve as a liaison to employers and graduate programs recruiting Furman students for Finance opportunities and programs.
  • Engage with prospective students and their parents about the support Furman provides to students interested in pursuing careers in finance and business and communicate the career outcomes of Furman graduates working in these fields. Participate in Admissions programming such as Fall for Furman and Furman Forward.
Cross-Functional Teams and University Initiatives
  • Contribute to the Malone Center's strategic planning process and support the overall work and strategic priorities of the Malone Center for Career Engagement.
  • Support the University's strategic goal of ensuring 100% of students participate in engaged learning experiences and 90% of graduates are employed or enrolled in a graduate program at graduation.
  • Represent the Division of Academic Affairs and Malone Center for Career Engagement on university committees.
  • Represent Furman University and the Malone Center for Career Engagement in local and national professional associations and conferences to stay current with industry standards and network with professionals in the field.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Career Education in support of the goals and objectives of the Division of Academic Affairs and Malone Center for Career Engagement.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree in counseling, higher education, or business preferred.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant experience in career advising ideally in a college career center setting and/or working in the field of finance strongly preferred.
  • Proven proficiency in cultivating productive and effective relationships with stakeholders including students, faculty, employers, parents and alumni.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences.
  • Adept at designing educational/professional development workshops - comfortable presenting to groups.
  • Proficient and comfortable with technology, social media, and digital communication. Preferred experience with utilizing Career Management Platforms, specifically with Handshake and GradLeaders.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented working style and demonstrate ability to effectively build and manage relationships with students, alumni, employers, faculty, and staff.
  • Proactive problem solver, able to balance and prioritize multiple projects at once.
  • This position offers a limited flexible and hybrid work schedule that aligns with the Malone Center's business needs. As a student-facing position, this position requires the staff member to primarily be in-person and on-campus.
