Job Responsibilities
The South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated professional to serve as a Director of Recruitment. This position will actively lead and manage efforts to recruit and admit a diverse and talented student body. This role involves communicating with prospective students and their families, scheduling and attending middle school and high school visits and other recruitment events and developing and maintaining relationships with school counselors and other educators.

This is a permanent, full-time position in Hartsville, South Carolina, with benefits provided through the State of South Carolina. The salary is competitive and commensurate with credentials and experience.

GSSM is a public high school serving 11th-12th grade students residentially and 10th-12th grades through virtual programs. GSSM's Outreach Center engages over 8,000 elementary and middle school students through various STEM educational programs around the state in partnership with several school districts.

The significant areas of responsibility for this position include:

  • Provides lead on planning & organizing statewide recruitment & retention activities for new Residential students, including school visits, community events & conference representation. Manage, coordinate & actively participate in on & off-campus recruitment events.
  • Manage and implement recruitment and admissions process for assigned territory to recruit highly talented and competitive students to GSSM's residential program. Build and maintain relationships with key high school counselors in assigned territory. Extensive (mostly seasonal) travel in assigned SC territory. Visit and represent GSSM at middle and high schools and other educational institutions, as well as professional conferences and community events based on strategic planning using historical data.
  • Conduct extensive outreach and relationship-building activities (via in-person communications, phone, email, written correspondence, and virtual) with prospective students and their families throughout the recruitment and admissions cycle. Guide students through the application process, including essay writing and submission of required documents. Review and evaluate applications to determine eligibility and fit for admission.
  • Generates statistical reports on overall recruitment strategies for the Residential program. Support the development of recruitment materials, social media & various communications with the VPEM & Dir. of Marketing. Maintain awareness of peer institution recruiting events, strategies, and timelines.
  • Utilize the Client Relationship Management (CRM) system to the fullest capacity to maintain student inquiries and contact records to provide timely communications to prospective students, parents, applicants, and school counselors.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
A bachelor's degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience in college admissions, counseling, or related fields.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Familiarity with admissions software and CRM systems.
  • Willingness to travel for recruitment purposes and work evenings and weekends as needed.
