Job Summary:

The primary function of a Phlebotomist is to assist in performing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging, and recording maintenance data. They also support troubleshooting, training, and providing workflow recommendations to ensure the smooth operation of laboratory processes. This position involves interacting with patients, explaining procedures, and ensuring specimen integrity for lab testing.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Specimen Collection and Processing:
  • Perform venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collections (e.g., urine, fecal) as required.
  • Explain the collection process clearly and courteously to patients.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and ensure 100% accuracy by checking requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
  • Store specimens according to required temperature, ensuring integrity during transport.
  • Package specimens for transport and follow protocols for maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Record Maintenance and Documentation:
  • Accurately record and maintain patient and specimen information in compliance with established procedures.
  • Update patient information and respond to telephone inquiries regarding lab results.
  • Compliance and Training:
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings and maintain certifications.
Additional Duties:
  • Assist with troubleshooting and make workflow recommendations as needed.
Required Qualifications:
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state in which you will be employed (where applicable).
  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of related work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Additional experience in a clinical or hospital environment.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems.
Certifications:
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification (as required by state regulations).
